Experience a Day in the Life of a Barred Owl Family

United States, Indiana, Carmel – 04-18-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — Wild Birds Unlimited in Partnership with Cornell Lab of Ornithology Hosts Live Barred Owl Camera

Wild Birds Unlimited invites everyone to tune into the live streaming video to see what a day in the life of a Barred Owl family is like. Not only does the public get a unique glimpse into the lives of one of nature’s majestic bird species, but they are also able to learn about the different stages of their development and watch the fledglings as they venture out for the first time. The live streaming video can be seen on wbu.com and AllAboutbirds.org/BarredOwls

This year, Mama Owl laid two eggs, the first on March 1, and the second on March 4th. The first egg hatched on April 3rd, the second on April 4th. Throughout the next several weeks viewers can observe Mom and Dad feeding their fast-growing brood. An infrared illuminator in the box means you can keep track of the owls’ comings and goings throughout the night (don’t worry—the light is invisible to the owls).

The young owls will leave the nest after four to five weeks and remain in the surrounding territory of the nest tree until they are able to fly at around 10 weeks. Siblings will stay together throughout the summer and are fed by their parents. Finally, the young will strike out on their own in late summer when the adults slowly wean them from feedings.

“I first placed the Wild Birds Unlimited Barred Owl Box in my wooded backyard in 1998 with the first nesting eight years later. I have had nesting owls almost every year since then, but have no idea if it is the same pair,” said Jim Carpenter, founder and CEO of Wild Birds Unlimited.

About the Author: Carrie Brunner

Carrie Brunner grew up in a small town in northern New Brunswick. She studied chemistry in college, graduated, and married her husband one month later. They were then blessed with two baby boys within the first four years of marriage. Having babies gave their family a desire to return to the old paths – to nourish their family with traditional, homegrown foods; rid their home of toxic chemicals and petroleum products; and give their boys a chance to know a simple, sustainable way of life. They are currently building a homestead from scratch on two little acres in central Texas. There’s a lot to be done to become somewhat self-sufficient, but they are debt-free and get to spend their days living this simple, good life together with their five young children. Carrie writes mostly on provincial stories.
