Australia Publishes New Mandatory Safety Standard for Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacles

December 08, 2017 – The Commonwealth of Australia has published its new mandatory standard for sunglasses and fashion spectacles. The new standard, Consumer Goods (Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacles) Safety Standard 2017, differs from the voluntary Australian/New Zealand standard: AS/NZS 1067.1:2016 Eye and face protection – Sunglasses and fashion spectacles, by deleting the following clauses:
• 1 – Scope
• 4.2 – Filter material and surface quality
• 4.3 – Physiological compatibility
• 7.4 – Increased endurance of sunglasses
• 7.5 – Resistance to perspiration
• 7.6 – Impact resistance of the filter
• 8 – Resistance to solar radiation
• 10 – Resistance to abrasion
• 12.1(c) – Reference to this Standard
• 12.2(a) – An explanation of the trademarks that are not universally recognized or foreseen by the users of this Standard
• 12.2(c) – The country of origin
• 12.3.2 – Methods of marking and labelling – Durability
• 31.1 – Removes the note: When compliance to this Standard is claimed, the manufacturer or its representative should ensure that compliance of the product with this Standard is valid during the lifetime of the product and not only at its first launch on the market.

Until July 1, 2019, manufacturers and suppliers can use either:
• Consumer Goods (Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacles) Safety Standard 2017 (based on AS/NZS 1067.1: 2016)
• Consumer Protection Notice No. 13 of 2003 — Consumer product safety standard: Sunglasses and fashion spectacles (based on AS/NZS 1067: 2003 with some minor changes)

From July 1, 2019, suppliers must comply with only the updated mandatory safety standard – Consumer Goods (Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacles) Safety Standard 2017.

Stakeholders are advised to check their products remain compliant with the latest version of the mandatory standard relating to sunglasses and fashion spectacles.
